Women In Design

Women In Design

"A two-day symposium conceived and organized by department of architecture undergrad students, Francesca Hughes and Natasha Nicholson, with keynotes by Jane Drew and Alison Smithson at the Dept of Architecture, Edinburgh University. This symposium invited practitioners and architectural historians to consider the role of women in the profession as architects, landscape architects, patrons, city users and subjects. Among the papers, Howard presented a paper on women patrons in the 16th century; Drew, a review of her extraordinary career and work in India and the UK; Smithson used autobiography, notably her childhood in Edinburgh, to talk about maintenance in the public realm; McIntosh on housing; Boyd Whyte presented his research on Taylorism and the 'emancipation of the house wife'. Christine Hawley was also due to speak but had to cancel last minute. The proceedings were never published."
