Womanifesto I
Womanifesto I
Began in 1997, Womanifesto has brought together exhibitions, workshops, publications, web-based projects and artist-in-residence programs with the aim to establish exchanges with artists, peers and colleagues and open up new connections with community groups, fulfilling Womanifesto’s aim to strengthen cultural relations with artists internationally and engage local communities while promoting new and emerging forms of artistic expressions. The project also focuses on linking practitioners from Thailand with those from the region and elsewhere with special attempts made to bring artists together, to highlight their shared cultures and establish fresh exchanges. While the original aim was to present exhibitions to strengthen links between and the visibility of women artists from the region and beyond, that aim developed to include exploration and valuing of local cultures including artisanship and links between traditional and contemporary art practices. Adopting fluidity as a strategy, Womanifesto developed projects to consider and open up diverse ways of doing by not setting final outcomes but supporting for things to evolve organically, with the focus also being on exchange and passing on of knowledge down the generations. The project has since started a Residency Program at Baan (home) Womanifesto in Udonthani province, Thailand, to encourage ongoing dialogue.
