Sex/Gender Systems in Native North America

Sex/Gender Systems in Native North America

A chapter within Living the Spirit: A Gay American Indian Anthology, the essay Sex/Gender Systems in Native North America explores “the relationship between the economic, ideological, and sex/gender systems of Native American societies” and how they altered and were disrupted by and throughout colonization. Author Midnight Sun follows Gayle Rubin's definition of Sex/Gender Systems as “a set of arrangements by which a society transforms biological sexuality into products of human activity, and in which these transformed sexual needs are satisfied.” Sun further investigates the cultural construction and native concepts of homosexuality, lesbianism, cross-dressing and gender roles.”
