Our God is Great
Liu Xi’s ‘Our God is Great’ “features 52 vaginas made from black porcelain, their labial folds recalling the floral imagery of Georgia O’Keeffe or the vulval ceramics of Judy Chicago’s famous ‘Dinner Party Project’, arranged on the gallery wall.” Through the piece, Xi is challenging “societal taboos with images relating to female genitalia, menstruation or childbirth” using “the sensual malleability and inherent fragility of the medium to ... convey ideas about how gender operates even today to uphold power imbalances in China.” Since the work's first installation at White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, 'Our God is Great' has expanded to new mediums and geographies, being exhibited in Spain, China, Denmark and Norway. Nils Ohlsen describes how the work successfully “demands the respect for and the equality of women, who are often overlooked, discriminated against, and oppressed in Confucianism, communism, in the one-child family, and to this day in many areas of Chinese society, including in the art scene.”
