General Assembly of Self-Organized Feminist Markets

General Assembly of Self-Organized Feminist Markets

”The Mercadita Feminista, the feminist market, [is] part of a movement that emerged out of the convergence of COVID-19-related job loss and a long uptick in violence against women in Mexico...Selling in the metro is technically illegal...[and] established vendors [don't] like the fact that the newly arrived women were infringing on their space...At first, the Mercaditas moved from one station to another in order to evade the police. As the movement grew, though, the markets multiplied...The Mercaditas also became a touchpoint for women seeking help...The metro itself is often a hotbed of sexual harassment, and the feminists intervened.”
